If the subject’s hand is outside the pocket, make sure the hand and fingers look natural ( FIGURE 6.32 ). If the thumb is hanging out ( FIGURE 6.33 ), take care that, when photographing from side angles, it doesn’t look as if another body part is peeking out of the pants, only to make a surprise appearance in the photo shoot (yes, I’ve seen photos where this was unclear).

When you pose the hands, you may also want to keep in mind some lessons of body language. For example, let’s say that your subject has his arms crossed in front of him. How should the hands look? Generally, the first thing I consider is my subject’s comfort. What hand position is most natural and comfortable for him? Keep in mind that there is a difference between open hands on the biceps or hands curled as fists. Open hands are more welcoming and friendly. Fists are stronger and give off more of an air of authority, and are not as welcoming. Which is correct? Depends on what you are going for!
